My name is Taz, and this is the story of my retirement from active duty to civilian life as a service dog. My hashtag is #tazoteausmc and this Day 17.
Mom changed my name. Now I’m called “Bad!” I love my new name, and so does she! She yells it all day long and even in the middle of the night when I fight with the Cheeto cat. I am studying his evil ways so that one day I will be the supreme commander of the house.
I think I’ve finally got the hang of training them. Yesterday, I wanted to go out so much. I wanted to play with my friends and run into the ocean and find IEDs in the sand. So I whined and cried and barked at the humans all morning and into the afternoon.
Mom finally said I could come with them to meet someone. I was so excited I didn’t even pee when we got to my bush. I just ran to the car and barked at it until they let me in. Then I whined and jumped and licked Mom’s hair, and finally, Mom said we could go play because I was being obnoxious. Or obstinate. Or obtuse. Oh, it doesn’t matter.
But it was a cruel hoax. I knew exactly where we were, and when we made the left to go to the dog park instead of the right to go to the beach, I did something Mom called “lost his shit” in the backseat, and I howled so my friends would know I was close, and then I whimpered because I was so upset. I couldn’t believe she didn’t do what I wanted. We were very close to the beach. I was so mad that I barked right in her ear for half a click.
Then they let me out to run around at the dog park for about a half hour. I met a Siberian Husky named Taffy. She was cute and silly. I think the training is working, but they’re pretty stubborn and kind of dumb. It’s a work in progress.
Today I started my crying and barking again but Mom locked herself in the bedroom with my boy and told me to be quiet because the boy had a migraine. Whatever that is, it made him cry for a long time. I thought he smelled different. Migraines are bad.
